Trump Calls on the Fed to Lower Rates as Tariffs Are Implemented
President Donald Trump urged the US Federal Reserve on Wednesday to lower interest rates to help mitigate the impact of his tariffs, once again expressing his strong disagreement with the central bank's decision-making. "Do the right thing," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, hours after the Fed decided to maintain rates while lowering its growth forecast and raising its inflation projection.
Although the Federal Reserve has anticipated two rate cuts this year, Chairman Jerome Powell emphasized that "uncertainty today is unusually elevated" and that inflation is rising.
Economists have warned that the tariffs, which are facing retaliation from other countries, could push the US and global economies toward a recession.
Trump has acknowledged that the economy may experience some "disturbance" as his tariffs are implemented, but he maintains that the US is on the brink of a "golden age." In his Wednesday post, he once again emphasized that April 2, the day he plans to impose "reciprocal tariffs" to reset global trade, would be a "liberation day" for the US economy.
However, he also wants interest rates to be reduced. "The Fed would be MUCH better off CUTTING RATES as US Tariffs start to transition (ease!) their way into the economy," he wrote.
During his first term, Trump consistently expressed dissatisfaction with the Fed's rate decisions, advocating for cuts to stimulate economic growth.
